The Wall Street Journal reports that Mark Willes, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, intends to set specific goals for increasing the number of women and minorities cited in news stories. Editors would be paid based partly on how well their reporters meet those goals. A great number of quotes used in news stories, of course, are the result of telephone interviews.
